Former U.S. Marine James T. "Jim" McColgan III is an experienced trial and appellate attorney whose practice focuses on defending health care providers in complex, high exposure litigation. Drawing on his 14-year tenure as an Infantry Officer and Judge Advocate, including more than three decades of experience in state and federal courts, he represents hospitals, physicians, advanced practice providers, health care organizations, and insurers in medical malpractice and professional liability matters.
Jim regularly serves as lead trial counsel and has tried numerous cases to verdict. He also has extensive appellate experience, with multiple published decisions, and advises clients on litigation strategy from initial claim evaluation through appeal. In addition to defending claims, he works closely with health care providers and risk management professionals to develop best practices aimed at reducing liability and preventing future litigation. He frequently presents training programs, risk management courses, and continuing legal education seminars.
Before joining Baker Donelson, Jim was the owner and managing partner of a boutique litigation defense firm near Memphis. Earlier in his career, he prosecuted criminal cases for the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
