Conducting background checks is a key factor to assist employers with ensuring a safe, secure workplace. In conducting those checks, however, it is also crucial that you abide by the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), with state and local mini-FCRA laws, laws governing credit history inquiries, and "ban-the-box" laws.

Understanding federal and state regulations governing background checks can be confusing and overwhelming; however, failing to comply with those regulations can result in costly legal issues for employers. In this month’s Chat, we will explore compliance with the FCRA and discuss the interplay of state and local laws governing background checks.
