Melodie Hengerer, a shareholder in the Baltimore office of Baker Donelson, has been appointed to the advisory board of the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT), an organization dedicated to supporting partners in the transplant field as they save and heal lives within diverse communities.
In her legal practice, Ms. Hengerer represents a broad range of health care providers, organ procurement organizations (OPOs), tissue banks, and other industry clients in navigating complex legal and regulatory challenges related to organ donation and transplantation. Her experience includes advising donor hospitals, transplant centers, and OPOs regarding regulatory and clinical compliance issues, government investigations, OPO mergers and acquisitions, health equity in transplantation, navigation of organ allocation and performance measurement standards, contract drafting and negotiation, litigation of claims, and corporate governance.
Ms. Hengerer serves on the advisory board of the Carlos and Marguerite Mason Center for Organ Donation and Transplant Education and Policy in the Mercer University School of Medicine, one of only two academic research programs focused on transplant ethics and policy in the United States, and the only such center in the South. She is also an individual member of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN).
A graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law, Ms. Hengerer is a member of the American Health Law Association, the American and Maryland State Bar Associations, and the Bar Association of Baltimore City, where she previously chaired the Health Law Committee. In 2022, she was recognized by Maryland's Daily Record as a Leadership in Law honoree, and in 2023, she was an invited speaker at the Thomas A. Pitts Memorial Lectureship in Medical Ethics at the Medical University of South Carolina.
