Sterling Kidd handles a wide variety of litigation matters in all industries, appearing regularly as first chair or appellate counsel in significant business disputes, personal injury and toxic tort matters, and regulatory disputes.

Mr. Kidd is a member of the Advocacy Department and is an experienced litigator who has tried and/or arbitrated cases to verdict in the business, product liability, and premises liability areas. Mr. Kidd has litigated numerous other cases in preparation for trial and positioned them for favorable settlements, and has significant litigation experience in areas ranging from consumer finance to constitutional violations.

Mr. Kidd's extensive litigation experience includes defending against complex, high exposure matters, including product liability, business disputes, lending, toxic tort, catastrophic personal injury, insurance coverage, and mass actions. He has served as counsel in PFAS litigation and defends against claims alleging airborne and groundwater contamination. He handles large scale insurance coverage disputes, including one arising from hundreds of underlying personal injury claims where he secured a $160 million directed verdict, and he has successfully litigated personal jurisdiction challenges resulting in dismissal of foreign entities. Mr. Kidd has also obtained favorable verdicts in numerous state and federal jury trials , including plaintiff's verdicts in the business space, defense verdicts in cases involving product design and manufacturing defect allegations related to automotive and industrial products, and has obtained summary judgment in product liability matters affirmed on appeal. He is also intimately involved in achieving remedies for clients like temporary restraining orders and/or injunctions. Lastly, he achieved one of Mississippi's first dismissals of a product manufacturer under Daimler/Bauman.

Mr. Kidd is a member of the Firm's 24 Hour Motor Carrier Emergency Response Team, a group of attorneys dedicated to providing rapid post-accident intervention and investigation throughout the Firm's footprint and beyond, whenever and wherever you need us.

Prior to joining Baker Donelson, Mr. Kidd was a clerk in the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for the Honorable E. Grady Jolly.

  • Currently defending a firefighting equipment company in toxic tort litigation involving allegations of PFAS exposure.

  • Obtained a $160 million directed verdict at the close of plaintiff's proof in an insurance coverage matter arising out of hundreds of underlying personal injury suits alleging TCA contamination.

  • Served as counsel in a case brought by a municipality alleging air borne and groundwater contamination, including allegations of aquifers supplying city water.

  • Obtained summary judgment in a catastrophic personal injury case alleging $20 million in personal injuries.

  • Obtained defense verdict in case of alleged premises liability in Hinds County, Mississippi Circuit Court.

  • Provided counsel in a nursing home arbitration that resulted in a defense verdict.
  • Obtained a defense verdict in a products liability case alleging a defective ball-joint stud, and obtained an order denying the plaintiff's request for a judgment notwithstanding the verdict.
  • Obtained a defense verdict in a products liability case alleging defective glazing in the Southern District of Mississippi.
  • Obtained summary judgment in a product liability case alleging a defective power-train control module, with the decision affirmed on appeal.

  • Obtained one of the first dismissals in Mississippi of a product manufacturer under Daimler/Bauman.

  • Obtained a defense verdict in an automotive product liability case against allegations of manufacturing defect.
  • Obtained defense verdict in automotive product liability case with allegations of design defect.
  • Litigated copyright infringement case against one of the largest sports cable television networks in the United States, and defeated their motion for summary judgment before obtaining settlement of claim.

  • Obtained a defense verdict in federal court after a five-day jury trial in a nursing home neglect case in which the plaintiff alleged that the staff's negligent care caused injuries and death of a resident. Plaintiff requested $1.25 million in compensatory damages.

  • Defended a British insurance company and one of its affiliates in a two-day bench hearing on personal jurisdiction in connection with a lawsuit involving allegations of the theft and misuse of personal data. Successfully obtained dismissal of the suit.
