A taxpayer who has filed a significantly false income or payroll tax return and who is selected for audit by the Internal Revenue Service is said to be undergoing an "eggshell audit" due to the risk that the audit may prompt the revenue agent to refer the examination of the taxpayer's returns to the IRS's Criminal Investigation Division (CID).

The taxpayer and the taxpayer's CPA or lawyer is said to be "walking on eggshells" during these civil audits. According to IRS-CID's most recently published statistics, if CID initiates a criminal investigation, there is about a 60% chance the case will reach criminal indictment. It is, therefore, essential to keep the audit civil. This webinar will inform taxpayers, income tax return preparers and their counsel of best practices to avoid a civil tax audit from turning criminal.
