The Baker Donelson Labor & Employment Group recently had the unique opportunity to meet with Solicitor of Labor Patricia Smith. Solicitor Smith provided insight into workplace issues frequently encountered by the Department of Labor (DOL). As Solicitor, Ms. Smith oversees more than 425 DOL attorneys across the country who administer and enforce more than 180 federal labor laws. In this seminar we will share what the Solicitor considers to be the top 10 mistakes that employers make in complying with federal employment law and will provide some suggested best practices on how to avoid them. We will discuss such topics as:
- Dealing with DOL investigations
- Independent contractors versus employee classification
- Overtime exemptions
- Tip credits
- OSHA abatement and compliance
