Baker Donelson Launches Title IX, Higher Education Group

Daniel A. Cohen Joins Firm as Chair of New Group

(Atlanta, GA / October 9, 2014) Baker Donelson, the 68th largest law firm in the country, announces the addition of a Higher Education Group to consolidate its already-substantial experience representing higher education institutions, including their athletic departments. The Firm also announces the addition of Daniel A. Cohen to the Firm's Business Litigation Department. Mr. Cohen will chair the Higher Education Group.

Attorneys and advisors in Baker Donelson's Higher Education Group have extensive experience representing colleges and universities across a comprehensive spectrum of matters. They advise institutions and handle litigation in numerous areas, including Title IX, facilities/construction, intellectual property, strategic planning, labor and employment, immigration, health care and tax law. They have significant experience representing athletic departments, university foundations, and university hospitals and health schools.

Mr. Cohen joins as a shareholder in Baker Donelson's Atlanta office, where he will focus his practice on representing institutions and their athletic departments in their legal affairs.  His Title IX compliance work includes defending colleges and universities against Title IX investigations by the federal Office for Civil Rights, providing proactive Title IX audits and compliance reviews, and developing litigation avoidance strategies. He serves as a Special Assistant Attorney General in two states to represent certain public institutions in Title IX matters. Mr. Cohen also advises colleges and universities on legal aspects of their strategic planning initiatives, NCAA governance issues and changing athletic conference affiliations.  In addition to higher education and sports law, Mr. Cohen has also litigated cases in the areas of labor and employment, intellectual property and products liability.
