One of the rights African Americans gained as a result of the Civil War was the right to free expression. Rather than rely on the newspapers of the day to carry their stories, black Tennesseans started their own newspapers to speak with their own voices.
NPT's Emmy Award-winning documentary chronicles the rise of these papers and their importance to the African-American communities of postwar Tennessee.
After the screening we'll hear from the program's producer, broadcast journalist LaTonya Turner; and Karen B. Dunlap, an educator, Pulitzer Prize jurist and one of the program's featured media experts.
Please register by February 8.
This program and lunch are complimentary.
Baker Donelson is a longtime underwriter of NPT's Black History Month programming.
