Industry Overview

Governmental and quasi-governmental entities deal with a wide range of legal issues that require counsel who understands both the operative rules and regulations and the context in which governments must act. Baker Donelson attorneys have assisted numerous local, regional, and state governmental bodies in carrying out their duties and responsibilities.

While our knowledge covers all areas of Government Law, one particular area of extensive experience is our work with metropolitan airport authorities and airport associations and their vendors across the country. We have been involved in every conceivable aspect of airport operations, including ground leases, air cargo, aviation easements, financing structures, and concession agreements. We have also assisted in bankruptcies, consultant contracts, construction projects, insurance regulatory issues, and joint use agreements with the military. We have an experienced and knowledgeable public policy team in Washington that works with the FAA and Congress on regulatory and legislative matters.

We also have one of the largest and most extensive affordable housing practices in the region. An integral part of the practice entails representing and working with housing authorities and state housing finance agencies.

In addition to airports and housing agencies, we have served as legal consultant and special counsel to various governmental departments, including disaster relief agencies, public safety departments, state social service agencies and human resource divisions of state and local governmental entities, development boards, privately-owned utility companies as well as those operated by municipalities.

If you are interested in economic development, we have put together a multi-disciplinary team which brings decades of experience to large, complex initiatives, including site development consultation, commercial, and retail, manufacturing, and multi-use and tourism projects. We have also served as special counsel to numerous governments in connection with long term public infrastructure projects, including potable water systems, transportation corridors and river ports.
