John A. Butler is an experienced trial lawyer who assists clients in a broad range of litigation matters.

Professional Biography


John Butler is an associate in Baker Donelson's Baltimore office and advises clients with complex civil and criminal matters – including government investigations and business, commercial, and health care litigation matters – across a broad range of local, regional and national industry sectors.  

John is an experienced criminal litigator. He also has experience in civil litigation including defending prominent health care practices and providers in complex litigation suits.

Prior to joining Baker Donelson, John served as an assistant state's attorney in the Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City. During his time with the Office, he served on three trial teams which prosecuted cases heavily covered by national news outlets. John is also a founding member of the Gun Violence Enforcement Division for Baltimore City. As a prosecutor, he prosecuted hundreds of cases in District and Circuit Courts, and has been first chair for more than 40 trials, including 14 jury trials in Circuit Court.

While in law school, John served as a judicial clerk for Judge Timothy J. Doory in the Baltimore City Circuit Court. During that time he aided in drafting the findings of fact for a monumental attorney grievance matter. John also previously served as a law clerk for the Homicide Division in the Office of the State's Attorney for Baltimore City.

  • Prosecuted hundreds of cases in District and Circuit Courts.

  • Represented prestigious hospitals and physicians in complex medical malpractice litigation.

  • Advised physicians on potential criminal exposure relating to malpractice litigation.

  • Represented defendants charged with criminal matters in Maryland State Court.

  • Served as local counsel for a national pharmaceutical company in defense of opioid litigation.
