Professional Biography


Bernie Graves is a chemical and material sciences patent attorney, with a particular emphasis on identification and protection of intellectual property rights in the manufacturing sector.   

Mr. Graves advises clients on the implementation of corporate procedures and policies to protect proprietary technology through all aspects of representation before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, in addition to identification and systematic protection of business and technical trade secret information. Mr. Graves advises corporate clients using tailored methodology for risk-based allocation of scarce financial and human resources to build the intellectual asset base of the enterprise. He provides pragmatic, cost-effective problem solving of day-to-day legal issues for his clients.

Additionally, Mr. Graves advises clients in all aspects of intellectual property due diligence, open innovation, and technology transfer, along with patentability and freedom to practice analysis.

Prior to joining Baker Donelson, Mr. Graves was vice president and deputy general counsel for a $9 billion diversified Fortune 500 chemical company, where he served as chief IP counsel for more than 16 years. In this role, he led a group of 15 professionals and support staff in the development of strategy, identification, creation and management of the company's patents, trademarks, and trade secrets.
