Mark Miller Comments on Profitability of Smaller Banks in Nashville Business Journal

While profitability among Nashville-area banks is pushing to new post-recession highs, those increasing returns are not trickling down to smaller banks. In this Nashville Business Journal article, Mark Miller points to increased regulatory costs as one reason it is "harder and harder" for small banks "to realize the same returns they did in the past."

"Regulatory spending if you were under $250 million [in assets] is the same as if you were at $500 million or $1 billion [in assets]. It doesn’t increase by that factor," Mr. Miller said. "And you have a greater drain on profits with less revenue and the same expense [as larger banks]."
