In the wake of deep budget cuts, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley announced the closing of 31 drivers' license offices, mainly in rural communities around the state. The move has resulted in federal prosecutors in Alabama looking at the closure of the DMV offices and how they may impact issues such as voting rights.

In this Al.com article, Lisa Borden, pro bono shareholder at Baker Donelson in Birmingham, notes that having a drivers' license is crucial to providing access to basic human services – such as being able to drive to the grocery store. "In this day in age it is hard for people to function without a drivers' license," Ms. Borden said.
