The recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling clearing the way for same-sex marriage across the nation could affect employers and employees in several ways. In this Birmingham Business Journal article, Jenna Bedsole notes that employers should review their benefit plans and company handbooks to make sure same-sex couples are provided the same rights and privileges.
"One of the things clients will likely ask is for lawyers to review their benefit plans or provide policy language for their handbooks in order to comply with the law," Ms. Bedsole said. "Employers should also revise their Equal Employment Opportunity and anti-discrimination policies to make sure that they reflect the change in the law as well."
