Scott D. Smith Joins Firm's Tax Department, D.C. Office

(Washington, D.C. / May 22, 2009) Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC today announced that Scott Smith has joined the Firm's Washington, D.C. office. Mr. Smith will focus his practice on taxation matters, to include federal, state and local taxation as well as multistate and employment tax issues. He joins a team of 60 attorneys Firm-wide with taxation experience.

Previously, Mr. Smith was a partner in the Washington office of LeClair Ryan. In addition to taxation matters, Mr. Smith also provided counsel to companies on issues related to mergers and acquisitions, divestitures and corporate restructurings. He has advised companies in a number of industries, including media and entertainment, software and technology, e-commerce, banking, financial services, insurance, retail, industrial and consumer products. Mr. Smith also worked in the National Tax Practice for KPMG LLP and as an assistant counsel at the Multistate Tax Commission.
He is a frequent speaker at local, regional and national tax symposia. He has authored over 30 multistate tax articles that have appeared in various tax publications including State Tax Notes, The State and Local Tax Lawyer, Multistate Tax Report and the Journal of Multistate Taxation.
Mr. Smith is a graduate of Mount Union College and received his J.D. at the University Toledo College of Law and an LL.M in Taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center. He is admitted to practice law in Washington, D.C. and Ohio and to the U.S. Supreme Court and U.S. Tax Court.
