The Japan-U.S. Strategic Advisory

A Specialized Consultancy for Leading Japanese Companies

The Strategic Advisory combines the perspectives and experience of former Senator and Ambassador to Japan Howard H. Baker, Jr. with the intelligence gathering and analytical skills of a team of Washington insiders, seasoned professionals and legal authorities to provide reliable, actionable advice and information to leading Japanese companies...

Investment Opportunities/Political and Economic Trends

Today's rapidly changing global business climate presents unprecedented opportunities for making inroads into new markets. At the same time, companies on unfamiliar ground can encounter difficult hurdles, unforeseen costs and face significant risks. Our Firm knows and understands the issues – whether it relates to import and export matters, government controls of foreign direct investment, the intricacies of a foreign economy or immigration questions related to trade. This is particularly true in the case of Japanese companies seeking to do business in or with the United States where, more than 30 years ago, senior members of our Firm began assisting such companies in overcoming commercial and political difficulties in doing business with the United States.

In the new global marketplace, with the global banking system under extreme pressure, Chinese and Indian economies expanding exponentially and the U.S. and Japan undergoing political turbulence and change, it is an important time to strengthen Japanese corporate understanding of the U.S. at a 21st century crossroads. As a new political landscape unfolds in the U.S., the Baker Advisory will provide strategic advice on opportunities and risks for Japanese companies doing business in the U.S., contemplating U.S. investments or strategically tracking U.S. policy shifts and their impacts on Japan and the global economy.

The Baker Advisory

The Baker Advisory is offered as a service of Ambassador Baker and the law and public policy firm Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC. The Firm was ranked by The National Law Journal in 2007 as one of the 100 largest law firms in the country.

The Baker Advisory includes a personal approach which emphasizes one-on-one dialogue and exchange of views between Ambassador Baker and business leaders in Japan. The dialogue is key in developing for each client a "strategic map of the world" focusing on the trends and developments that affect the U.S.-Japan relationship and the business opportunities and risks presented by the rapidly changing economic and political environment. Several developments and trends will factor into this strategic picture which include:

  • Developments in the U.S. economic and political landscape
  • Developments in business and financial regulation and foreign investment
  • U.S. policies and politics concerning U.S. relations with Japan including economic, defense, energy, trade and investment policies and developments creating risks and opportunities for Japanese companies.
  • U.S.-Japan business relations, trade and investment opportunities and the impact of the global economy
  • U.S. national security and economic policy regarding China, the Koreas, Russia, India and the Middle East and the impacts on the U.S.-Japan strategic relationship and economic partnership.
  • U.S. energy and environmental policy including nuclear energy developments

This strategic map will serve as the global frame of reference for Ambassador Baker's personal assessments, opinions and guidance based on closely held, highly discreet, select information gathered from Washington insiders and members of industry in the U.S. and worldwide.

Based on Ambassador Baker’s long association with Japan, a select group of leading Japanese companies are being invited to participate.
