Former University of Alabama Player Richard T. Davis Brings Sports Law Practice
January 15, 2013
(Birmingham, Alabama/January 15, 2012) Richard T. Davis, a former football player for the University of Alabama and the Cincinnati Bengals, has joined the Birmingham office of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC, bringing his long-time sports practice to an AmLaw 200 firm with 18 offices from Washington, D.C. to Houston, Texas.
"Without question, Rick is a national leader in sports law. His sports agency practice is unique because he is an attorney and he only represents coaches, as opposed to others in his field who are not attorneys and who represent coaches and players," said D. Keith Andress, managing shareholder of Baker Donelson's Alabama offices. "Rick's practice fits well into our Firm, and together we can provide his clients a broader scope of legal services such as tax planning, trust and estate planning, corporate counseling, real estate and virtually any other legal need that may arise. We are excited about Rick joining our firm, and look forward to the many opportunities that this brings to us, Rick and Rick's current and future clients."
Mr. Davis, who joins as of counsel, represents head coaches, coordinators and assistant coaches in negotiating employment and endorsement agreements and providing advice and counsel on career moves. His clients include many of the most sought after coaches nationwide as well as emerging coaches at all levels.
Mr. Davis noted that his motivation to make the move to Baker Donelson was the ability to offer expanded services to his clients. "As a full-service law firm, Baker Donelson has incredible resources and a broad range of capabilities that allow me to significantly expand the type of legal counsel I can bring to my clients. I'm proud to become a part of a firm with such an exceptional reputation and shared commitment to client service, and I look forward to the benefits that this partnership offers my clients."
Mr. Davis attended The University of Alabama on a football scholarship where he played under legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. During his four years at Alabama, the football team won four SEC championships and one national championship. Following his senior season in 1974, he was elected as permanent co-captain by his teammates. Mr. Davis was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1975 and played four years in the National Football League. He is a 1983 graduate of the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.
Also joining the Firm is Ronnie Sanders, who has worked with some of the biggest names in college football at major programs such as Auburn, LSU, Florida and Southern Miss. He joins Baker Donelson as the Firm's Sports Marketing Coordinator. "We are also excited to welcome Ronnie to Baker Donelson," said Mr. Andress. "Ronnie is very talented, and will remain an integral part of Rick's practice."
"Ronnie is a tremendous asset to what we do for our coaches," added Mr. Davis. "He has served on football staffs at major colleges and has been in meeting rooms when game plans have been put together and recruiting decisions were made. That experience and insight, coupled with my experience as a player in college and the NFL, assists us in meeting the needs of our coaching clients."
