La’Verne Edney is a litigation shareholder in Baker Donelson's Jackson office. She has significant trial experience in state and federal courts, and has tried to verdict numerous medical negligence and breach of contract cases. She also routinely defends against claims alleging premises liability, products liability, bad faith insurance, employment discrimination and legal malpractice.

La’Verne has also defended property management firms and currently serves as lead counsel for a major food chain in cases involving allegations of inadequate security which led to injuries and/or deaths of residents, customers and/or third parties. In addition to litigating matters, La’Verne is also a certified mediator.

La’Verne currently serves as a Bar Commissioner for the State of Mississippi. She was selected as the Woman Lawyer of the Year (2011), the Mississippi College School of Law Young Lawyer of the Year (2010), one of Mississippi's 50 Leading Business Women (2007) and the Capital Area Bar Association's Outstanding Lawyer of the Year (2010).

Recent Representative Matters

  • Verdict as co-lead counsel in favor of client in nursing home negligence action in which the plaintiff alleged that a nursing home's negligence resulted in dehydration, fecal impaction, and death of a resident.
  • Summary judgment in favor of long term care facility in case alleging wrongful death of a nursing home resident resulting from the development of pressure wounds and sepsis.
  • Defense verdict as co-lead counsel on behalf of a client who allegedly sold legal services products by fraudulently misrepresenting the services covered.
  • Directed verdict as lead counsel in favor of client in suit alleging nursing home negligence which led to stage IV wounds, amputations and ultimate death of resident.
  • Obtained voluntary dismissal as lead counsel in a premises liability case where the plaintiff was allegedly shot by a customer.
  • Lead counsel for major restaurant chain in suit alleging that inadequate security led to customer's stabbing and ultimate death.
  • Verdict in favor of client as co-lead counsel in state court jury trial alleging wrongful death of a nursing home resident who developed a stage IV pressure wound.
  • Verdict in favor of client in action in which the plaintiff alleged that a long-term nursing home resident sustained a sizable pressure wound during the last months of her life and ultimately death due to the negligence of the nursing home.
  • Obtained favorable resolution for client in nursing home negligence case where resident had allegedly been dropped by the nursing staff.
  • Obtained favorable resolution on behalf of client who allegedly acted in bad faith in honoring the terms of a contract for underinsured motorist coverage.
  • Obtained favorable resolution for owner of multi-family housing complex accused of providing inadequate security and maintenance which led to assault and rape of a resident.
  • Verdict in favor of client as lead counsel in federal court jury trial alleging bad faith insurance coverage.
  • Summary judgment dismissal in favor of client as lead counsel in bad faith insurance coverage dispute in state court.
  • Obtained favorable ruling from the Mississippi Court of Appeals affirming the dismissal of the claims in which the plaintiff sought $750,000 in compensatory damages and over $2 million in punitive damages for bad faith failure to pay insurance benefits under a homeowner's policy.
  • Successfully defended and resolved legal malpractice suit brought against attorneys and law firm wherein the plaintiffs alleged fraud and breach of fiduciary duty.
  • Successfully resolved gas heater explosion case which led to the death of a minor.
  • Successfully resolved an insurance dispute as lead counsel where the plaintiffs alleged that the insurance company acted in bad faith in adjusting their home owner's claim.
  • Jury verdict in favor of client in state court jury trial alleging medical negligence and false imprisonment. Decision upheld by Mississippi Supreme Court.
  • Dismissal in favor of client as lead counsel in case alleging bad faith insurance coverage of home, contents of home and mold remediation.
