La'Verne Edney, shareholder in the Jackson office of Baker Donelson, concentrates her practice in products liability, tort liability, commercial litigation and health care litigation. Ms. Edney has been named the Woman Lawyer of the Year by the Mississippi Women Lawyers Association in 2011, Mississippi College Black Law Student Association's 2010 Alumni of the Year, the Capital Area Bar Association's 2010 Outstanding Service Award recipient and the Magnolia 2010 Outstanding Service Award recipient. She was also recognized as one of Mississippi's 50 Leading Business Women by the Mississippi Business Journal in 2007. Ms. Edney has experience in the areas of insurance coverage and bad faith actions, medical malpractice defense and premises liability defense. She has defended hospitals and doctors in medical negligence cases, businesses in premises liability and mass tort cases, and financial institutions against claims for breach of contract, business interference and fraudulent misrepresentation. Ms. Edney has tried more than 10 jury trials in state and federal courts in Mississippi and is a certified mediator.

  • Tried cases in state court for financial institution in breach of fiduciary duties, negligent misrepresentation, interference with business relationship, breach of contract, fraud, and breach of duty of good faith and fair dealings law suits.
  • Represented major hospital in an employment discrimination case.
  • Obtained defense verdict in medical malpractice lawsuit against major hospital.
  • Represented family owned business in personal injury lawsuit.
  • Represented physician and hospital in medical malpractice trials.
  • Tried federal court jury trial in employment discrimination case.
  • Tried state and federal court jury trials on behalf of legal services provider in interference with business relationship, breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation cases.
  • Obtained defense verdict in breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation case for legal service provider.
  • Represented financial institution in breach of contract and fraudulent representation case.
  • Represented insurance companies in breach of contract, fraudulent misrepresentation, and insurance premium offset cases.
  • Tried cases in state court on behalf of local car dealership in breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation cases.
  • Represented attorneys and their law firm against legal malpractice action.
  • Represented major gas company in state and federal courts and tried state court actions involving pipeline litigation, including prosecution of injunctive relief and eminent domain actions, and defense of surface damage and personal injury claims.
  • Represented major manufacturing companies in asbestos and tobacco litigation.
